Bishops Seed and Produce first opened its doors to customers in August 1949 in Kinghorne Street, Nowra, the premises being situated on the site now occupied by the Holt Arcade. Its founder, Ray Bishop returned to Nowra from Sydney with his wife, Nan, in order to establish a business in his home town. He had been working for Arthur Yates and Co, seed merchants in Sussex Street, Sydney, for several years before and after World War II. Ray Bishop initially purchased the local Egg Board agency, through which all local producers sold their eggs and from which local retailers purchased their supplies. Ray's business experience with Yates encouraged him to expand his business in trading in farm supplies, especially pasture seed. At that time there was not a great deal of improved pasture in the area and he saw an opportunity to encourage farmers to sow rye grasses and clovers into pasture to make them more productive. Vegetable and garden seeds were also sold and became an important part of the business, meeting the needs and growing demand of the backyard and market gardeners. One service led to another and fertilisers, chemical and garden supplies were soon added to the list of goods available at the store. |
